Jump into the dynamic world of public relations (PR), where creativity and strategy shape the brands we love!

This course is packed with hands-on activities, allowing you to explore how campaigns are crafted, audiences are engaged, and brands come to life.

Set in an interactive learning environment, you’ll dive into the essentials of digital marketing and PR, and try out practical skills in storytelling, social media strategy, and audience analysis, gaining insights into how marketing influences people’s choices every day.

You’ll develop a creative campaign concept from start to finish, applying techniques used by real marketing and PR teams to engage and connect with audiences.

  • You’ll be part of a design community in our creative studio culture; one that promotes discussion and collaboration, and encourages experimentation and the constant swapping of ideas.
  • With a limited class size you'll have the one-to-one attention you need to ensure you leave with the skills to continue developing your designs at home or work.

Doing your Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential Award?

This course can count as your Gold DofE Residential Award and is an amazing opportunity to make new friends and memories. It will be fun and gently challenging, allowing you to follow your passion and discover talents you never knew you had.

DofE participants must book both the course and accommodation on campus for this to count towards your Gold Award.

You must also attend the social events that are planned on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and you must plan and attend your own social activities with other participants on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

What you’ll study

Through practical exercises and real-world scenarios, you’ll explore how campaigns come together, how audiences are understood, and how brands build loyalty.

With group projects and interactive sessions, you’ll develop skills in planning, storytelling, and teamwork, while also exploring the ethical and social considerations of marketing.

This course offers a great introduction to PR, building useful, transferable skills in a lively, engaging setting.

During this course, you will:

  • discover the essentials of marketing and public relations
  • get hands-on experience with real-life campaign planning and execution
  • learn how brands use social media, content creation, and storytelling
  • develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills for strategic marketing
  • work collaboratively in teams and present your ideas with confidence.

By the end of this course, you’ll have explored the essential skills for building and launching a campaign, from crafting messages to selecting the best channels. Through hands-on practice and teamwork, you’ll gain valuable insights into this fast-paced industry and leave with new insights into how these fields shape the world around us.

You’ll also leave with practical experience and a mini-portfolio showcasing your ideas and skill, setting you on a path toward future education and a career in these fields.

Social events

We appoint NTU Student Ambassadors who host social events on Monday and Wednesday evening to help you make friends across the whole of our summer school programme for 15 – 17 year olds, which are free to attend.

Begin with an introduction to marketing and PR, understanding how they shape public perception and influence consumer decisions. Explore memorable campaigns, dive into audience research and start creating audience personas and brainstorming campaign ideas around a product, event or cause.

Dive into campaign planning essentials. Learn to craft clear, impactful messages that resonate with audiences and explore strategies for choosing the best channels, from social media to press releases, to effectively reach target audiences. Continue developing campaign ideas, focusing on creating engaging messages and selecting appropriate channels.

Explore digital marketing and PR tools, including social media, email marketing, content marketing and influencer relations. Experiment with creating sample digital content tailored to campaign goals and learn techniques to foster interaction through digital platforms.

Explore the ethical considerations in marketing and PR, discussing real-world examples of both effective and controversial campaigns. Reflect on responsible messaging, audience impact and the importance of transparency.

Practice storytelling and presentation skills to communicate campaign ideas effectively. Finalise campaigns and present to the group. Wrap up with a reflection on skills learned and discuss the impact of marketing and PR in today’s world.

Tutor profile:

Jodie Heginbotham (MCIPR) is an award-winning business owner and results-driven communications professional with experience working in-house, agency side and as a freelancer managing media relations and implementing industry-recognised national campaigns across sector specialisms including fashion, construction, retail and healthcare.

She currently leads modules across PR, communications, and journalism at Nottingham Trent University and as part of NTU’s partnership with the Communication University of China (CUC).

Jodie has a Masters in Magazine Journalism (from Nottingham Trent University), a Diploma in Professional Public Relations and is an accredited member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR).

Campus and facilities

You will be studying in the Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism, as part of the School of Social Sciences on the City Campus.

You will find modern teaching spaces and group study environments to develop your ideas and skills as a journalist.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Entry requirements

Level: Beginner

Entry requirement: You should have an interest in creativity, branding, and exploring how stories and strategies shape public perception. A curious mind and enthusiasm for working on team projects will help you get the most out of this course.

You must be 15, 16 or 17 years old at the time of the course in order to attend.

Fees and funding

The fee for this course is £525.

Payment is due at the time of booking.

Secure your place with a deposit - If you're booking more than two months before the course starts, we can accept a £200 deposit to secure your place, and the balance is due one month before the course starts.

Your course fees cover the cost of studies and include great benefits such as the use of our modern library and free use of the IT equipment and software on the campus during your course.

Need accommodation?

Accommodation can be booked separately to the course; the rooms are only a few minutes’ walk from our studios and classrooms, and cost £259 per week, which is ideal if you're looking to be based in Nottingham's lively city centre and want an economical place to stay.

These are single rooms with a private bathroom in shared apartments in Nottingham Trent University’s city campus accommodation.

If you're aged 16 or 17 then you can stay unaccompanied with agreement from a parent/guardian (to support safeguarding, all guests aged 16 and 17 will be accommodated together in the same halls of residence and there is a dedicated Warden available).

If you're aged 15 then you can stay as long as you are accompanied by a parent/guardian (you must book two separate rooms and let us know so we can place you in rooms next to each other).

This option is particularly popular with students completing their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Residential Award.
